St. Augustine's Church
A few miles southwest of Shullsburg, in the little Village of New Diggings stands St. Augustine's, the only remaining wooden church built by Father Samuel Mazzuchelli. The structure was designed by Mazzuchelli in 1844 and predates Wisconsin's statehood. At first glance, the building appears to be of brick or stone. Look more closely, though, and you'll see that the entire exterior is wood, which Mazzuchelli had carved so to give the appearance of a grand church. The weather-beaten Greco-Gothic church has withstood the beatings of time, and is now being restored by the Father Mazzuchelli Assembly of the Knights of Columbus of Lancaster, Wisconsin.
